◄ Compositions List
"Cats" was the third musical set I composed after obtaining a JV-1080 sound module in about 1994 (or 1995). There was a fairly long hiatus between the last pieces of "Rain" and this music.
Written after I'd just had a devastating experience with a cat family, this music was generally sad in tone.
One afternoon at work I brought home a very gentle and sweet stray someone had dumped in the produce market of South San Francisco, where I was employed. I'd figured out she was pregnant even before bringing her home. I hadn't had any cats in the household for about 8 years. I named her Zaerrf, because the first or second night while I was working on my computer, she lumbered on the keyboard and typed out a "message" to me, and that was some of the jumble of letters she stepped on before I put her back on my lap (she preferred to have my full attention).
She had five kittens, though one died at age two days. I decided to keep two of the others, and a friend adopted the other two.
Things were splendid for six months. Then one evening, one of the kittens was having a really hard time breathing. After an emergency room trip and a trip to another vet the next day, it was determined she had FeLV (Feline Leukemia Virus). I'd heard of this, but knew nothing about it. It turns out the mother was infected, and it was passed on to all the kittens. Over the next year the entire family of kittens and Zaerrf died. It was a nightmare.
I did intersperse some of my sadness with some kitten glee I'd happily experienced as well. Several samples are available below.
