I took a two week vacation in May 1977 and drove to San Francisco with a friend, Nancy Anne Jenkins. At that time I decided to move here, and I returned exactly a year later, in May 1978. Immediately people from home began to visit, and I discovered others I knew from Ames and the Midwest had already moved here. Soon others would also immigrate here It was a very special time in San Francisco.
I have tried to give credit to people who have helped by providing their cache of photos. If I have neglected anyone or mis-credited anybody, please notify me, as it is an oversight or error, not intentional. Some of these location photographs were taken on a return trip I made to Ames from San Francisco in 1980. The locations were still very similar to the 1970s then. I am told many of these buildings no longer exist.

This photograph was taken on Parkridge (Twin Peaks area) in San Francisco in Jack Strang and Steve Fleming's apartment, November 22, 1979. I had guests visiting from Florida whom I'd met in Florence, Italy in 1978: Pierina Guido (who took the photograph) and Butler Waugh (in the picture). Left to Right: Ken Calendar (later known as Kent Mason), Dennis Brumm, (back) Butler Waugh, (front) David Halterman, (pink shirt) Doug Cantrall, Wade, (front leaning on his elbow:) Joe, (back white T-shirt with print:) Steve Fleming, Jack Strang, and furthest right in the back, Dennis Wells. Ken/Kent, Doug, Wade, and Joe all died of AIDS over the course of the next 11 years. Steve Fleming died in 2002. Jack Strang now lives in Germany, Dennis Wells is still, far as I know, in the Bay Area, and Butler and Pierina are still both apparently in Florida, though no longer together. Jack Strang, adorned in holiday hats at a New Year's Eve party, Webster Street, San Francisco, December 31, 1979. As the new decade was happening, I was getting ill with hepatitis A, a present from a National Park ranger (a nice guy otherwise!) (courtesy of Dennis Brumm)
